Дамба Гувера строилась 5 лет, и когда в 1936 г. строительство завершилось, она стала одним из крупнейших сооружений гидроэнергетики в мире. Сейчас она вырабатывает 4 млрд. кВт-ч энергии в год, чего достаточно для 1,3 млн. человек.

Виадук Миллау — самый высокий мост в мире. Его самая высокая опора тянется вверх на 343 м. Мост парит над облаками. Создателям этого сооружения приходилось бороться с оползнями и ветрами, которые достигали порой скорости 130 км/ч, мощными штормами, когда мост просто висел в воздухе. Этот мост бросает вызов пределам инженерной мысли. При его создании необходимо было решить три сложнейшие задачи:
— Воздвигнуть самые высокие в мире опоры.
— Поместить на них полотно шоссе весом 36 тыс т.
-Поставить 7 стальных пилонов весом по 700 т.
И сделать все это в сотнях метров над землей.
